Treatment Overview
About Sperm Freezing (Sperm Cryopreservation)
Sperm freezing, or "cryopreservation," involves collecting and cooling your sperm to sub-zero temperatures (–196°C). At this temperature, all biological activity stops, essentially "pausing" the sperm in time until you are ready to use them.
Sperm freezing should be offered to anyone going though IVF with very low sperm numbers, or those having medical treatments that might impact their fertility—such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or certain surgeries. It is also a vital option for those undergoing gender reassignment or for men who wish to store a 'fertility insurance policy' due to age or high-risk occupations.
Safety Information
Benefits, Risks & Side Effects
01
Benefits
The primary benefit is peace of mind. It provides a safety net for your future, ensuring that your chances of biological fatherhood are protected even if your health or circumstances change.
Thanks to a significant change in UK law, you can now store your sperm for up to 55 years, provided you renew your consent every 10 years. This long-term flexibility allows you to focus on your health or career today, knowing your options for a family are securely "on ice."
02
Risks
Sperm freezing is a non-invasive and safe process with no direct physical risks to the patient. The main clinical consideration is that not all sperm survive the "thaw" process. However, modern cryoprotectants (special fluids used during freezing) are highly effective at protecting the cells.
There is a very small risk of "cross-contamination" between samples in storage; to prevent this, all UK clinics strictly follow HFEA regulations, which include mandatory blood screening and separate storage tanks for different health profiles.
03
Side Effects
There are no physical side effects associated with providing a sample for freezing. For some men, the process of producing a sample in a clinical environment can be stressful or cause performance anxiety. UK clinics are well-versed in this and provide private, comfortable rooms to make the experience as stress-free as possible.

Patient Journey
What to Expect
A step-by-step guide through your Sperm Freezing (Sperm Cryopreservation) journey—from preparation and what happens during the procedure to recovery and aftercare.
01/ 03
Before Procedure
Before you can store a sample, UK law requires you to have a blood test for infectious diseases, including HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.This ensures the safety of all samples kept in the lab.
You will also have a consultation to sign the HFEA consent forms. These forms are very important as they state exactly what should happen to your sperm in the future, including who can use them and what should happen if you were to pass away. For the best quality sample, we usually recommend 2 to 5 days of sexual abstinence before your appointment.
02/ 03
During Procedure
On the day, you will be shown to a private room to produce a semen sample through masturbation. This is usually done on-site at the clinic to ensure the sample is as fresh as possible when it is frozen.
A scientist (andrologist) will immediately check the sample under a microscope to assess the count and how well the sperm are moving. They then add a "cryoprotectant" fluid and gradually cool the sample before plunging it into liquid nitrogen for long-term storage. The entire visit usually takes about an hour.
03/ 03
After Procedure
Once your sample is in storage, there is nothing more you need to do physically. The clinic will provide you with a report on the quality of the frozen sample and the number of "straws" or vials stored.
The most important post-procedure step is keeping in touch. It is your responsibility to update the clinic if you move house or change your contact details. Under UK law, if the clinic loses touch with you and your consent expires, they are legally required to discard the samples.

3 questions
Under current UK law (updated for 2026), you can store your sperm for up to 55 years, provided you stay in touch with your clinic and renew your consent every 10 years. Because the sperm are kept in liquid nitrogen at –196°C, all biological "clocks" are stopped. This means a sample frozen for 20 years is just as viable as one frozen for 20 minutes. The quality does not degrade while in storage; the only "stress" the sperm face is during the initial freezing and the eventual thawing process.

Yes, absolutely. Thousands of healthy babies are born in the UK every year using frozen and thawed sperm. While not every single sperm cell survives the thawing process, modern "cryoprotectant" fluids are incredibly effective at protecting the cells. Even if the sample quality is lower after thawing, specialists can use a technique called ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection), where a single healthy sperm is selected and injected directly into an egg, ensuring the best possible chance of a successful pregnancy.

Performance anxiety is very common and nothing to be embarrassed about. If you are struggling to produce a sample on-site, most UK clinics allow you to produce the sample at home or in a nearby hotel, provided you can deliver it to the lab within one hour and keep it at body temperature (for example, by carrying it in an inside pocket). If you are physically unable to produce a sample—for example, due to a medical condition or surgery—doctors can sometimes perform a minor procedure called SSR (Surgical Sperm Retrieval) to collect sperm directly from the testicles.
